Alisson Becker reveals IMMEDIATE thoughts on his MIDFIELD trial

Liverpool return to Premier League action as they head to Molineux on Saturday evening to face a struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers side.

The Reds have been handed a major injury boost with goalkeeper Alisson Becker back available for selection after being sidelined for two matches.

The 31-year-old suffered a minor muscle injury, believed to be picked up in Liverpool’s defeat to Nottingham Forest with Kelleher stepping in for him against Bournemouth and West Ham.

The Irishman once again filled in for Alisson flawlessly, demonstrating why he wishes to go elsewhere for regular football.

It speaks volumes on the levels Kelleher shows when the absence of the best goalkeeper in the world is sometimes unnoticed when the Irishman is called upon.

Arne Slot was quick to heap praise on his second-choice keeper when he declared Alisson back fit.

“Of course, we’re really happy with Alisson being back but I want to emphasise the fact that Caoimhin [Kelleher] did really well in the two games he was in goal for us, so another example of me having two, and I think even three, good options in certain positions,” Slot said in his press conference.

Alisson was destined to be a keeper

A modern-day goalkeeper is expected to be as good with their feet as they are with their hands.

A huge emphasis has been made on teams utilising their shot-stopper as part of building up play from the back.

This is what is separating the best keepers from the rest, with Alisson being among that elite bracket who shows outfield quality with the ball at his feet.

He’s one of the few goalkeepers you watch and jokingly think ‘he could do a job in midfield’.

The Brazilian comes from a family that has a goalkeeping pedigree.

Alisson’s mum, Magali Lino de Souza Becker, was a goalkeeper in handball at school. His late father, Jose Agostinho Becker, played between the posts for his work team.

His great-grandfather was a keeper in amateur football in Novo Hamburgo in Brazil, while his older brother Muriel started out in goal at Internacional.

It’s fair to say Alisson was always destined to be a goalkeeper.

Speaking to the BBC ahead of Liverpool’s visit to the Molineux, Alisson did admit that he gave playing in midfield a go due to the urge of his brother, Muriel, to do so.

“My brother knew how hard it was to be a goalkeeper and he told me: ‘No, go and play striker, play somewhere else – you will suffer too much.’

“I did one session in midfield and then said: ‘No, not for me.’ I enjoyed watching him [Muriel] between the posts, diving and making saves. I chose the position as well and love to be a goalkeeper.”
