Casemiro: Man Utd need to ‘mirror’ Man City to succeed

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro thinks the club’s new co-owners should use rivals Manchester City as a “mirror” to bring glory back to the club.

The Brazilian’s comments come after the Red Devils were thoroughly outplayed by Pep Guardiola’s men in the Manchester Derby on Sunday, losing 3-1 at the Etihad.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has said he intends to knock Man City “off their perch” after his company INEOS bought 25 percent of the club from the Glazers, taking over football operations at Old Trafford.

Casemiro believes Man United‘s new minority owners can help bring success back to the club by taking inspiration from Man City’s rise over the last decade and a half.

“The first big objective is to catch up with them at this moment,” Casemiro told ESPN Brasil. “Not in terms of history, as the history of United speaks for itself, but they are today the team to beat. Everyone wants to beat City.

“It is very clear the new owners (INEOS) want to evolve the club’s level, with City being our mirror. They have been doing a great job. I hope they (INEOS) help us grow together.”

Man Utd are in danger of missing out on next year’s Champions League as they sit 11 points off fourth-placed Aston Villa. Fifth could be enough to qualify for the competition this season, with Spurs currently occupying that spot in the Premier League table with a six-point advantage over Erik ten Hag’s side.
