How Nobel Prize WINNER is creating new tactics for Liverpool

A collaborator with Liverpool – and a lifelong fan – has just won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. The Reds are working with the very best.

Demis Hassabis has won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his protein folding predictions. Hassabis, who works for Google DeepMind, working with AI.

He’s been awarded half of the prize jointly, with his use of AI able to predict protein structures – a problem that has stood for over 50 years. Hassabis is the co-founder of Google DeepMind, one of the world’s foremost AI companies.

And there are, would you believe, links to Liverpool. The Reds have worked with Deepmind on tracking data – essentially, it’s the data of where players and the ball move on the pitch.

AI is able to predict these movements, allowing teams to see the potential outcomes of different scenarios. They’ve publicly used this across corners, for example.

Liverpool and DeepMind are able to play out an incredible number of simulated corners from different starting points. This could be with different players on the pitch, different starting points, or simply with different types of deliveries.

From there, they can see the probabilities of each scenario to result in a goal (or not). It’s already paid dividends, too, as we saw with Liverpool’s work from corners to beat AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League this season.

It’s no surprise that Hassabis and DeepMind would work with Liverpool. For starters, the Reds have long been at the forefront of data in football under FSG. It’s one of the first major moves the Americans made after purchasing the club.

But Hassabis is also a lifelong Liverpool fan. He was even there at Anfield on the night of the famous 4-0 win over Barcelona.

It’s safe to say that Liverpool have taken full advantage of that link – and now they’re officially working alongside a Nobel Prize winner.
