Jordan Henderson in line for SHOCK return to former club
Jordan Henderson’s career hasn’t exactly gone upwards after his departure from Liverpool.
After 12 years and 492 games on Merseyside, the former captain headed for the wealth and sun of Saudi Arabia. He signed for Dammam-based Al-Ettifaq in the summer of 2023, joining up with Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard who remains manager for the club.
Henderson, however, played exactly 19 games for Al-Ettifaq before having his contract terminated and instead signing for Dutch giants Ajax. Whilst a stint at one of the true historic clubs of European football is more respectable, Henderson still completely lost his place in the England squad.

He now captains Ajax, although has seen his play time limited over the past few weeks related to injury issues. Meanwhile, he returned to Liverpool recently, being seen at the AXA Training Centre catching up with former teammates for an as-yet-unknown reason.
A stunning return?
But now a sensational report from Football Insider claims that his boyhood club Sunderland are working on a stunning deal to bring their former player back to Wearside in the January transfer window.
Whilst his contract with Ajax runs until the summer of 2026, the report claims that the Dutch side would not stand in his way if he wished to return home.
Jordan Henderson rumours?
Hmm. Very close to Jude, who speaks very highly of him. Experience in the dressing room and on pitch to Jobe/Rigg. Might want to come back.
Feasible? Yes. Worthwhile? Unsure. pic.twitter.com/zUfpM72Xkp

With Sunderland currently playing in the Championship, having not been in the Premier League since 2016-17, Henderson returning to the club would be nothing short of shocking.
Sunderland have started this season excellently, however, currently topping the Championship and having recently fought to a 2-2 draw with last season’s play-off final losers, Leeds United.
Despite finishing 16th last season, the northeast club have high ambitions. They are now majority-owned by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, a French businessman and son of Adidas CEO (and former Marseille owner) Robert Louis-Dreyfus.
Under Louis-Dreyfus’s ownership, they have made multiple high-profile signings including Jobe Bellingham, brother of once-Liverpool-linked Jude Bellingham, and developing the now-Liverpool-linked wonderkid Chris Rigg.
Henderson would definitely be a statement of intent by Sunderland. If he manages to get them promoted, it would be quite the sight to see him on the other side of things at Anfield.
