Darwin Nunez enters Premier League top ten with latest goal

The headlines seem to follow Darwin Nunez wherever he goes.

The Uruguayan has been box office ever since arriving at Anfield – for good and for bad – and he has become a relentless force when leading the Liverpool forward line.

Darwin Nunez now has 25 goal contributions in 38 appearances for the Reds and he was at the centre of Liverpool’s success once again at the weekend.

It was the 24-year-old’s deft header that won Liverpool a crucial three points against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday, the South American providing the only goal of a nervy game.

Nunez’s effort wasn’t any old winner, however, with the former Benfica striker grabbing his 14th goal of the season in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time at the City Ground.

As a result, Nunez’s strike has immediately entered the top ten of latest goals in Premier League history according to 90min, with the ball crossing the line with exactly 98 minutes and 35 seconds on the clock.

The Liverpool No. 9’s header ranks as the tenth latest in the competition’s 32-year history, with only one other Red making the list.

Dirk Kuyt currently ranks second in the top ten for latest strikes, scoring a penalty during a 1-1 draw with Arsenal back in 2011 in the 102nd minute at the Emirates.

Robin van Persie had scored what appeared to be a winning spot kick only four minutes earlier, but the Dutchman’s late strike saw the points shared after a chaotic finale in north London.

The majority of the rest of the top ten is made up of goals from this season, rather unsurprisingly given the increase in stoppage time being played at the end of matches.

Only four of the efforts haven’t come from this term and you wouldn’t bet against Liverpool securing some more late winners during the remainder of the campaign.

The Reds have already netted three Premier League 90th-minute winners this season including Nunez’s effort against Forest, while Liverpool also boast the division record for last-minute strikes.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have netted 16 goals in the 90th minute or later in all competitions this season and have been much stronger in the second halves of matches so far this term.
